DreamWorks Animation and SKG Inc’s animated movie “Megamind” opened at #1 at the US Box Office this weekend and took it to its best weekend in past three months. The movie raked in about $47.7 million during that time, which is only slightly short on the predictions of it earning over $50 million in the same time. However, it has to be remembered that a similar thing happened to the last movie from this house “How To Train Your Dragon” — which did go on to become quite the hit. It had gathered $44 million in the same time period.
The movie “Megamind” is all about a hapless super-villain voiced by Will Ferrell and it seems to be all set to becoming a booming success. It has seen #1 openings in Ukraine, Singapore, Malaysia and Philippines and has gathered $18.6 million there. The studio is planning to coincide the release with the school holidays in tha various countries — thus making an even bigger impact.
On #2 is “Due Date” and #3 is “For Colored Girls”. The former having gathered $33.5 million and the latter $20.1 million so far — they are both being lined up with a lot of expectations of them performing well this week.
These three made up most of the $146 million boost that US Box Office got this weekend from the 12 total movies that have contributed. This is highest since July 23-25 when “Inception” was the movie driving sales.
Although a good animation is bound to get a lot of a attention right now, with the holidays right around the corner but good animated movie in 3D is going to get more attention. Also, the two other competing movies do not have the pull power over the wide audience that the DreamWorks release has. So logically it should be at the top and there it is.
