As it turns out, the Nintendo leak reported earlier was spot on. Nintendo finally unveiled their latest handheld gaming device at E3 and it is a nice piece of work. Dual touchscreens and the best part is this — 3D viewing without glasses. So the nightmare I had about looking like a dork in public wearing 3D glasses, is not going to come true after all. Nintendo is mimicking the home theatre industry actually and going all out on 3D. Indeed, both of them have the same reason to do so — sagging sales.

Nintendo revealed the Nintendo 3DS at the recently concluded E3 and it looks like they are pinning all their hopes on the fact they can now make you think that you are a looking at a real thing with 3 dimensions. The Nintendo Ds has just got an upgrade with a touchscreen and a 3D display. The the main display is a touchscreen that can display 3D content without requiring the viewer to wear silly glasses in order to complete the illusion.

The 3DS comes with 3.53 inch screen as the main display and a 3.02 inch touch screen with the other controls to aid in navigation and secondary controls. There are 3 cameras on the 3DS, two external and one internal which can 3D pictures. There’s a slide pad for 360º input, a gyroscope and an motion sensor. Given that there is no need to wear 3D glasses, the display is likely made to project a different image to each eye to create the illusion of 3D. So it is possible that the system needs some sort of viewer tracking system in order to be effective.

Nintendo has also announced that the successor of the Wii will support 3D. Well, even if they hadn’t announced that officially it was easy to see that that is the most obvious way to go right now. That said, what happened to innovation?
