One of the main complaints against the 3DTV’s is that they need you to wear these silly 3D glasses. This really kills the experience for a lot of people. And when you are sitting down with others, the glasses take away from the experience of watching something together. They get in the way of communication, which is usually unspoken while the show’s running. Sharp’s new technology looks to do away with the glasses for watching 3DTV.
This new TV from sharp is about 3 inches long, so you are not going to mount it on your wall and view it from the couch. Instead, you are going to hold right in front of your face and stare straight into it. So it is a bit more active than the usual viewing experience. The reason you need to do this and the reason behind it’s not needing you to wear the glasses is that it attempts to project different images on to each eye. Normally, the glasses are what separate the images for each eye and the viewing distance and location remains unchanged.
However, just as an aversion to wearing glasses is common, I cannot imagine too many people wanting to swap out their glasses for holding the screen right in front of their noses all the time. After a hard day of blogging, I would like to lie back on my couch and channel surf leisurely. I definitely do not want to hold a screen inches from my nose at that time, 3D or no 3D.
In the meantime, Sharp has chosen the perfect test group — handheld gaming device users. They are pretty much used to staring at 3inch screens fixedly for hours on end. So if things go well with them, we can look forward to this technology being used on larger screens, turning people into zombies in their own household.
Now that I have communicated this piece of disturbing future news, I will proceed to say that you can probably relax now because we are still some way off from offering a true 3D experience.
