After wonderful movies like Madagascar, Shrek and Kung Fu Panda, one comes to expect from Dreamworks a certain degree of finesse and class when it comes to 3D animation. And with How to Train Your Dragon 3D, Dreamworks has delivered yet again. This is probably the first Dreamworks movie that centers around a human teenager and not an adult or animals. Based on the best-selling children’s book by Cressida Cowell, this is one adventure that is really meant for the kids in your family, even though it is fully enjoyable for adults as well.
The story is set in a world where Vikings fight dragons and the Viking clan leader’s son is the protagonist. Stoick’s son Hiccup is an intelligent boy but he s a scrawny teenager who is more capable of using his wits than his muscles to get the job done. But being the clan leader’s son, he is put under a strict regiment and he soon joins the dragon fighting class like the rest of the teenagers.
He is required to train his dragon (which he captures) just like everyone else. But instead of treating it like a stupid beast, Hiccup ends up befriending this spirited and immensely characterful dragon. Hiccup soon becomes an ace student in his classes, thanks to his newfound understanding of dragons. But it also helps him to understand that the feud between vikings and dragons is pointless and all due to the lack of communication between the two races.
The story is pretty predicable of course — Hiccup, the oddball, decides the fate of two races and saves the day at the end. But he manages to do it in a humor and action filled way that will entertain any adult and certainly keep the kids wanting more. It is not the most complex or layered story like some of the other Dreamworks movies but that’s because this is mainly meant for kids.
